Most Diwali injuries involve children, and most are preventable. They come from three things: the wrong item for the age, no adult within reach, and returning to a cracker that did not light.
This is what we tell customers who ask what is genuinely safe for kids — including when it costs us a sale.
Good choices, by age
Under 8, with an adult holding or lighting
- 7cm and 10cm sparklers. Short, cool-burning relative to the long ones, and over quickly.
- Small flower pots. Stationary, no projectile, all colour.
- Novelty items from the kids' special range — snakes, pencils and similar, which produce effect without force.
8 to 12, adult supervising closely
- Longer sparklers (15cm), one at a time, held at arm's length.
- Ground chakkars. Placed on flat ground, lit and stepped away from.
- Larger flower pots.
Teenagers, adult present
Most ground items. Aerial shells and repeating shots should stay with adults — they are the ones that go wrong.
What to skip entirely for children
- Anything primarily loud. Bijili, bombs and atom bombs. Hearing damage in children is permanent and happens at closer range than people expect.
- Rockets. Unpredictable flight path, and they need a proper launch setup.
- Aerial shells and repeating shots. High energy, adult items.
- Anything hand-held that is not a sparkler.
The supervision rules that matter
- One adult per small child. Not one adult watching six.
- Cotton clothing. Synthetics melt onto skin. Tie back long hair.
- Footwear on, always — most burns are on feet.
- Water and sand within reach, before the first cracker is lit.
- Light at arm's length, with an agarbatti rather than a match, and step back immediately.
- Never go back to a dud. Soak it. This is the single most common cause of serious injury.
- Never in the hand, and never in a bottle or a tin.
If something goes wrong
Cool a burn under running water for at least ten minutes. Do not apply toothpaste, oil or ice. Cover loosely with a clean cloth. For anything involving the eyes, or a burn larger than a palm, go to hospital immediately — do not wait to see how it develops.
Buying for a household with children
Weight your order towards ground and light items, and keep the sound items few and adult-handled. Our kids' special range is built for this, and the eco-friendly items on the price list are also the quieter ones.
Frequently asked questions
What age can a child hold a sparkler?
Around 5 or 6 with an adult holding their hand, using the shortest sparklers. Below that, let them watch.
Are green crackers safer for children?
They emit less, which helps with air quality, but they are not less hot or less loud. Choose by category, not only by the green label.
Which items are quietest?
Sparklers, flower pots and ground chakkars.
